English Language Arts A10
Prerequisite: ELA 9
ELA A10 has two study themes, Mysteries of Life and Challenges of Life. Through questions
for deeper understanding, students comprehend and respond to a variety of contemporary
and traditional grade appropriate oral or print texts from First Nations, Metis, and other
cultures for learning, interest, and enjoyment. Students also compose and create a variety
of forms to present thoughts, feelings and experiences. Included in the course is students
learning to assess and reflect upon their language skills in all six strands of study.
English Language Arts B10
Prerequisite: ELA9
ELA B10 is an issue – oriented course that includes language as the base for learning,
thinking and communicating. Listening and speaking, reading and writing and representing
and viewing are the vehicles of language. This course is organized around human concerns
facing contemporary society. The two main issues in this course are “Equity and Ethics” and
“the World Around and Within Us”. Students will use language and language conventions
purposefully and effectively as they process information, make decisions, write concisely
and clearly and think creatively and critically.
English Language Arts A11
Prerequisite: ELA9
This is a modified English credit. This course builds comprehension, critical thinking,
writing, and oral skills by looking at a variety of texts. The lessons are also arranged
around study themes: challenges of life and mysteries of life.
English Language Arts B11
Prerequisite: ELA9
This is a modified English credit. This course builds comprehension, critical thinking,
writing, and oral skills by looking at a variety of texts. This is an issue based course which
means that we use texts to ask questions of the world around us. This course focuses on
Equity and Ethics and The World Around and within us. Students will look at questions such
as “What are some factors that create inequalities?” and “How can I have an impact on my
world?”
English Language Arts 20
Prerequisite: ELA A10/B10
ELA 20 has two study themes, Starting Out and Moving Forward. Through questions for
deeper understanding, students comprehend and respond to a variety of contemporary and
traditional grade appropriate oral or print texts from First Nations, Metis, and other cultures
for learning, interest, and enjoyment. Students also compose and create a variety of forms
to present thoughts, feelings and experiences. Included in the course is students learning
to assess and reflect upon their language skills in all six strands of study.
English Language Arts 21
Prerequisite: ELA A11/B11
The modified ELA 21 course follows the same themes as the ELA 20 course with
modifications to foster student success.
English Language Arts A30
Prerequisite: ELA 20
ELA A30 is a theme based course that is organized around the ideas of what it means to be
Canadian and where this meaning comes from. It involves the following two units of study:
Canadian Perspectives: Distinct and Rich which explores, through texts – in all its forms –
the issues that influence Canadian culture and Canadian identity. Some big questions this
class examines include what does it mean to be Canadian? How do we express and convey
our identity as a people? What are our values, and how do we demonstrate them within and
beyond our borders. The other unit of study is Canadian Landscapes: Diverse and Dynamic
which examines how has this vast land shaped individuals, cultural groups, and nations of
people within Canada? The big question the class studies is how do the landscapes in which
we live influence our thinking, our ways of being, and our interactions with others?
English language Arts B30
Prerequisite: ELA 20
ELA B30 has two study themes The Search of Self and The Social Experience. Through
questions for deeper understanding, students comprehend and respond to a variety of
international including indigenous grade appropriate contemporary and traditional oral or
print texts for learning, interest, and enjoyment. Students also compose and create a
variety of forms to present thoughts, feelings and experiences. Included in the course is
students learning to assess and reflect upon their language skills in all six strands of study
English Language Arts A31
Prerequisite: ELA 21
ELA A31 has two study themes Canadian Perspectives and Canadian Landscapes. Through
questions for deeper understanding, students comprehend and respond to a variety of
Canadian contemporary and traditional oral or print texts from First Nations, Metis, and
other cultures for learning, interest, and enjoyment. Students also compose and create a
variety of forms to present thoughts, feelings and experiences. Included in the course is
students learning to assess and reflect upon their language skills in all six strands of study.
English Language Arts B31
Prerequisite: ELA 21
ELA B31 has two study themes The Search of Self and The Social Experience. Through

international including indigenous contemporary and traditional oral or print texts for
learning, interest, and enjoyment. Students also compose and create a variety of forms to
